DSI Insights: Policing with AI – a challenge for the justice system
In the second DSI Insights of the year, Sarah Summers, director of the Digital Society Initiative (DSI), explains why predictive policing using artificial intelligence (AI) poses a challenge for the justice system.

What if you could prevent a crime before it happens? This is both the promise and the danger of AI-based so-called predictive policing. It promises more efficient, proactive rather than reactive policing and, as a result, a lower crime rate and greater security for society. At the same time, however, it is also associated with a number of serious concerns. One example is that, unlike earlier methods, the basis for its predictions is not explainable. This makes legal regulation all the more important.
