Digital Publics

The DSI Community Digital Publics addresses key challenges related to the transformation of public life through digital technologies, which are inherently interdisciplinary in nature. To tackle these challenges, researchers from a wide range of disciplines collaborate, including the social sciences, computer and data science, law, linguistics, and the humanities.

Digital technologies were long seen as an opportunity to strengthen public communication, opinion formation, and social participation. Today, however, this potential is increasingly accompanied by concerns about the quality of public discourse, the resilience of democratic institutions, and the political, social, and psychological consequences of digital environments. What opportunities and risks does digitalization pose for public life? The DSI Community Digital Publics engages with these questions and shares its insights with researchers, stakeholders, and the broader public. In doing so, it aims to develop practical, solution-oriented approaches to fostering inclusive, transparent, and sustainable digital publics.

The DSI Community Digital Publics was formed in 2026 from the merger of the two DSI Communities Communication and Democracy.
