Ivo F. Sbalzarini, Prof. Dr.

Ivo F. Sbalzarini is Professor of Scientific Machine Learning at the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Machine Learning (DM3L) of the University of Zurich (UZH). Before joining the University of Zurich in 2026, he was a Professor of Computer Science in the Institute of Artificial Intelligence at Dresden University of Technology (TUD) since 2014. Since 2012, he was also a tenured Senior Research Group Leader with the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) in Dresden, Germany, and a director of the Center for Systems Biology Dresden (CSBD).

Ivo was a member of the managing board of the German federal AI center «Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence» (ScaDS.AI), fellow of the DAAD Zuse AI School of Excellence SECAI, steering committee member of the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS), which he co-founded, and department head in two DFG Clusters of Excellence. He was the founder and study coordinator of the successful international M.Sc. program «Computational Modeling and Simulation» at TU Dresden, and from 2021 to 2025 he was the Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dresden.

Ivo holds a doctorate (Dr. sc. techn.) in Computer Science from ETH Zurich, supervised by Prof. Petros Koumoutsakos. Before moving to Dresden, he was assistant professor of Computational Science in the Department of Computer Science of ETH Zurich from 2006 until 2012.

Ivo was awarded the 2006 Chorafas Prize by the Weizmann Institute of Science, the life-long honorary membership of the Technical Society of Zurich in 2012, and the GFF teaching award of TU Dresden in 2019.
