DSI Insights: Writing is thinking – even with AI?

In the third DSI Insights of the year, Noah Bubenhofer, Co-Director of the Digital Society Initiative (DSI), explains how artificial intelligence (AI) can help with writing texts and why it does not always make sense to leave the writing of a text entirely to AI.

It has become a platitude to claim that generative artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the writing and reading of texts and the way we deal with information. Chatbots and other AI tools are widely used to obtain help. But what effect does this have on language and society?

For many people, the use of AI in writing is a blessing that makes their everyday lives easier: generating ideas, helping with phrasing, answering questions, structuring information, writing and summarizing texts, analyzing and describing data, and much more. At the same time, however, major problems arise: Who is responsible for a text that AI has helped to write? Who checks whether the content is correct? What forms of assessment are still useful at universities and schools if AI can solve the tasks? And are AI systems even being used in a way that makes sense?
