In the module «Computing and information technology» Michael Böhlen (Department of Informatics) develops new analysis tools for peta-data in the range of 1015 bits to help preserve the user's privacy. In the module «Societal, regulatory, and educational challenges» Markus Christen (Center for Ethics and UZH Digital Society Initiative) and Florent Thouvenin (Department of Law) analyze ethical and legal aspects related to the use of big data in the insurance industry. The project of Effy Vayena (Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute) is aimed to investigate big data aspects in the health framework. Finally, within the module «Applications» Emanuela Keller (Neuro-Intensive Care Unit of the Clinic of Neurosurgery of the University Hospital Zurich) develops an IT-platform for monitoring patients in intensive care units. In addition, the University of Zurich is involved with Abraham Bernstein (Department of Informatics) in the «Pig Data» project from the University of Bern on health analytics in the pig industry.
The National Research Programm (NRP) «Big Data» thus represents a first field for research activities that are closely linked to the UZH Digital Society Initiative.
