How do we get there? Adaptive and effective design of mobile navigation assistance devices (Lecture in english)

Millions of international citizens make decisions with and navigate using mobile phones, as GPS-enabled smartphone devices have become increasingly available to the general public. Along with this increasing use comes concern that we are losing spatial skills, which are vital to making our way around and solving spatial problems. This talk will discuss potential ways to balance the use of our brains and technology as we navigate through the world. How should we design mobile map systems that effectively and efficiently get us to our destination, while preserving our cognitive abilities? Specifically, we will discuss the impact of display design on navigation and how we should adapt mobile navigation assistance devices to individual users and contexts.
Aktive Gestaltung (Crafting) von Berufs- und Privatleben in Zeiten der Digitalisierung (Lecture in german)

Digitalisation allows for increasing flexibility of working hours and work location - often combined with home office. This flexibilisation enables and requires an active shaping (crafting) of professional and private life and the balance between both areas. We present current research on the extent and patterns of active shaping in these areas and how this affects the health of the workforce. We also show to what extent the extent of demands and resources in professional and private life influence these relationships. Finally, we give an overview of how the home office, which was forced for many people in the context of the Corona crisis, has affected the work and health situation of the workforce.
Continuous monitoring of activity and qualification profiles in the digital economy: changing qualification requirements and the consequences for employees (Lecture in english)

This interdisciplinary study uses continuous monitoring to investigate how the activity and qualification profiles of jobs change in the course of digitization and what consequences this has for the unemployment risks, wages and mobility opportunities of employees. Of particular interest is whether IT skills and IT-complementary skills are increasingly in demand, whether occupational activity and qualification profiles are becoming increasingly specialized or diversified and whether qualification profiles tend to converge or diverge between occupations. Results on the effects of these trends on the working population will show how the opportunities and risks of digitization are distributed in the labor market and among occupations. The project is funded within the framework of NRP77 Digital Transformation. The lecture will focus on the theoretical background, the methodological approach and the practical significance of the project.
Possibilities of digital technology and platforms for researchers in the digital humanities and social sciences (Lecture in english)

In this event, three members of the Latin American Center of the UZH will present their current projects, all closely tied to the possibilities that digital technology and platforms offer for researchers in the humanities and social sciences. It will be an interdisciplinar panel in which fields as different as business, linguistics and photography will dialogue to show possible uses of technology in their disciplines.
In his talk, Christian Hauser will present the findings of his recent field research in Latin America on responsible business practices in the region. He will discuss the role of multimedia in the presentation of his findings, explaining how the results of his study have been presented in the form of text, photo, audio, video, as well as graphic objects. This raises the question as to how scientific publications could look like in the era of digitalization.
Carlota de Benito will discuss the two main levels on which digital technology has changed linguistics. The first one affects research methodologies, where the digitalization of the sources provides a simplified and broader access to them. Moreover, the sophistication of analytical methods allows for more complex quantitative analyses. The second level has to do with the object of study of linguistics itself, since digitalization has opened up new communication channels that can be studied and that offer larger quantities of data than what could have been imagined a short while ago.
Dayron Carrillo will present a digital platform currently being built that brings together archival documentation, biographical testimonies, audiovisual material and critical essays on the theoretical-methodological contributions of photographer Armando Salas Portugal to the aesthetic modernity of Mexico. The project is aimed at students, teachers and researchers interested in studying 20th century Mexican modernity from a transversal and multimedia perspective, with approaches that contemplate disciplinary fields such as Literature, History and History of Art, Philosophy and Anthropology.
Digitale Transformation der Sekundarstufe II (DigiTraS): Hintergründe und Perspektiven einer repräsentativen Bestandsaufnahme im Rahmen des NFP77 (Lecture in german)

Since the last surveys on the state of digital media integration in Swiss schools in 2001 and 2007, there is a lack of representative data on the efforts made in this regard in upper secondary schools. The project is therefore planning an updated survey with interviews with school administrators, teachers and pupils. The surveys are to cover all parts of the country and all types of schools (grammar schools, vocational schools, vocational baccalaureate schools and specialist baccalaureate schools or corresponding training courses). A particular focus will be on school development activities and teaching practices. In addition to questionnaire surveys, 20 case studies from particularly advanced schools will complete the picture. The project is led by Prof. Dominik Petko (UZH), in cooperation with Prof. Philipp Gonon (UZH) and Prof. Albert Cattaneo (EHB Lugano) and is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation within the framework of the National Research Programme 77. It will start in May 2020. At the Brown Bag Lunch, theoretical background and methodological approaches of the project will be outlined.
